What Is a Battelle Number?

    History

    • The Battelle Memorial Institute is a "think tank" which opened in 1929 using monies provided in the will of noted industrialist Gordon Battelle (1888-1923). The institute is a charitable organization dedicated to scientific research and technological advancement. It is known for its donations to schools and other educational establishments, and employs more than 22,000 staff.

    Divisions

    • The Battelle Institute consists of three divisions: Health and Life Sciences, Energy Technology, and National Security. In addition, the Institute manages a number of national laboratories. Each invention or piece of intellectual property developed by the company and accepted by the U.S. Patent Office is issued its own number.

In the civilian world, the Battelle Institute is probably most famous for the development of the dry copying technique of Chester Carlson, leading to the development of the first Xerox machines and the company of the same name. Battelle also developed the first armor plating for U.S. tanks in World War II, early compact disc technology, cruise control and a bar of "no melt" chocolate for use by combatants in humid terrains.
