- 1). Use a course grain sand paper to sand a wooden trailer. This will remove chipped paint and other debris that will hinder a smooth coat of paint.
Use a chemical metal stripper to remove the paint from a trailer made of metal. Metal stripper solutions come in liquid or gel form, and their application techniques will vary by brand, so be sure to read their label instructions carefully. - 2). For a wooden trailer, repeat the sanding process with a fresh piece of sand paper until the trailer surface is smooth and ready to be washed.
For a metal trailer, follow the metal stripper with a rust-killing chemical to avoid rust from building up on the trailer's surface. - 3). For a wooden trailer, use the water hose, sponge and soap to wash the trailer in order to eliminate any grit that could cause the new paint to chip or flake.
For a metal trailer, use the wire brush to make sure all particles of old paint have been removed before washing. - 4). Wait for the trailer to dry.
- 1). Put a drop-cloth beneath the work surface, so that the street or driveway is not stained.
- 2). Using the paint brush, paint the trailer with a coat of paint primer. If necessary, apply two coats. Be sure to use the appropriate surface paint for the type of trailer being repainted.
- 3). Let all coats of primer dry.
- 4). Evenly distribute the automotive or exterior paint with the brush onto the trailer in a thin coat.
- 5). Add another coat of paint and let dry. More coats can gradually be added until the desired color is achieved.
