Can I Take Home-Canned Vegetables Across the Canadian Border?

    Limits on Vegetables

    • There are only small limits on bringing canned vegetables (home-canned or otherwise) into Canada. Each person may bring 15 cans of preserved vegetables (or fruits), up to a maximum of 250 kg (about 550 pounds).

    Excess Amounts

    • If you are importing amounts of preserved vegetables in excess of 15 cans or 550 pounds, you should consider contacting the Export and Import Controls Bureau of Foreign Trade and International Affairs Canada to obtain an import permit.

    Declaring

    • If you are unsure of the quantity of goods, it's always a good idea to declare what you are transporting to a customs official. If arriving by air, you can make a written declaration via your customs and immigration form. If arriving by car, the declaration is usually oral. If the customs officer has any concerns about the quantity of goods, he will ask you a few questions.
