- 1). Suit up in weather-appropriate clothing. If you are going to be climbing in hot, dry weather, protect yourself with a short-sleeved shirt and sturdy pants. If you are going to be climbing in colder weather, stay warm in thermal undergarments, a long-sleeved warm shirt and weather-resistant pants.
- 2). Wear approved hiking shoes. Your shoes need to be appropriate for outdoor hiking and climbing and supportive enough to offer plenty of foot and ankle protection.
- 3). Attach your climbing harness once you are dressed. The harness should fit securely and snugly around your body and should offer plenty of space to attach your gear. Tighten it up for a firm fit, but make sure it does not restrict vital movement.
- 4). Secure your rope to the harness using a large carabiner. A carabiner is a large metal clip that slips open to allow movement of attached items. Be sure you can reach your rope as you will need it during your climb.
- 5). Clip your helmet around your harness until you begin your climb. The harness offers you a hands-free method of holding your helmet if it does not need to be worn at all times.
- 6). Place your flashlight, knife and any other small accessories on your harness or in a small pack, if you choose to carry one. Just be sure that small items such as a flashlight are handy, in case of an emergency.
