Options for Getting Around Bangkok

Getting around Bangkok can be a challenge. The sprawling city has plenty of tourist attractions, amazing food and great guesthouses and hotels, but in between each place you want to be is typically a ton of traffic! To make matters worse, it’s often very hot and humid, so walking long distances isn’t an option for most.

How best to get around Bangkok then? There are a half a dozen different common means of transportation, from canal boats to motorcycle taxis.

  • The Bangkok Train System
  • As a rule, the subway and the Skytrain will get you where you want to go fast and comfortably, but they don’t serve all parts of the city.
  • Bangkok's River and Canal Ferries
  • Bangkok's boats are not only efficient but they're an adventure in themselves. At least once during your visit try to take a river or canal ferry.
  • Bangkok's Bus Sytem
  • Bangkok's bus system is comprehensive, but subject to traffic.
  • Bangkok's Taxis
  • During morning and evening rush hour, stay away from taxis if you can.
  • Tuk Tuks
  • Tuk Tuks are a fun way to get around the city. They aren't comfortable (or economic) for long trips but are perfect for quick rides.
  • Motorcycle Taxis in Bangkok
  • Motorcycle taxis fill in voids left by other means of transport.
  • Riding Bangkok's Songthaew
  • Songthaew, a cross between a pick up truck and a bus, are all over Thailand.
