Tips on Train Assistant Sleepers on Amtrak

    Tickets

    • It's best to purchase your tickets for Amtrak sleepers on Sleepliner or Viewliner as far in advance as possible. These areas of the train are limited and sell out quickly, especially for long journeys. If you book your tickets through the phone ordering system or online you are guaranteed a sleeper car. You might even find sale prices online when booking your sleeper train ticket.

    Room Types

    • Different types of rooms are offered on Amtrak sleeper trains. In sleeper cars, seats are booked by each bed sold, so if you choose a room with more than one bed, and you are a solo traveler, you could be booked with a stranger in the same room. One type of room is the "Roomette" which is designed for two adults and does not have a bathroom. The "Bedroom" is a step up, accommodating two adults and including a shower and toilet. The "Family Bedroom" is only available in the Sleepliner, but sleeps two adults and two children but has no bathroom.

    Packing

    • Rooms include electrical outlets, so you can use your electronic devices while on the journey. Amtrak also offers free Wi-Fi on select cars. Pack lightly if you are sharing a room. Linens, towels and toiletries are provided, so you can leave these items at home.

    Upgrade

    • When you arrive on your train without a ticket for a sleeper, you can ask for an upgrade. The conductor can sell you a sleeper bed for the journey, and you can pay the difference on the spot. Sleepers might or might not be available last minute.
