Some tips for your children's local travel The best item to have is a school/recreational travel 'Security and Safety Plan' for your children.
This equates to a full awareness of Risk Management.
The Plan should cover all contingency plans and timings that are needed to ensure secure and safe travel between two points.
oPlan your walking route to the bus or school.
This should involve the shortest but safest routes, with few street crossings, safe street crossings, and in very public and well lit areas.
oHow long should they take to arrive? What is the procedure at each end if the child is late? oDoes your child have a waterproof and shockproof watch? oMake sure your child knows the route well, and be wary of potential short cuts such as crossing parks or fields, creeks, and bush areas.
oYour child should never talk to strangers or accept rides, food, or gifts from people that they do not know well - and have not been approved by you.
oHave a buddy system when walking to school; pick a reliable friend, neighbour, or family member.
oYour child should know the road and traffic rules, either when walking or biking.
In wet weather take your child by car or bus.
oAny pick up or drop off should be as close to, or within the school/recreational facility compound as possible.
oTeach your child to be mindful of empty, lonely or dark bus stops.
oGive your child a pre-programmed mobile phone, with speed dial.
oYour child should wear distinctive high visibility clothing if walking or riding.
oConsider contingency planning for your security plan.
