With coastal waters on the east and lakes throughout its rural landscape, North Carolina is a popular site for fishing. In order to fish around the state, though, residents and visitors must purchase a fishing license. There are various ways to get a permit, both online and in-person, as well as different types of permits to get. - If an angler has Internet access, the easiest way to purchase a fishing license is to go to the website for North Carolina's Wildlife Resources Commission (See Resources). That site allows access to the ALVIN system, which is North Carolina's Automated License and Vessel Information Network. From there, the angler can buy a fishing permit, along with other wildlife-related licenses.
- If an angler would rather find an outlet to buy her license in person, she will need to find a wildlife service agent. Wildlife service agents are independent agents of the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission and provide a variety of services to sportsmen, including selling licenses. Wildlife service agents are located in all of North Carolina's county. A directory of them, along with an interactive map of every office, can be found on the commission's website. (See Resources)
- According to North Carolina law, anyone fishing in the state's public waters must have a license. That law changed in 2007. Before 2007, anglers were allowed to fish in their own county without a permit. Additionally in 2007, a new law was passed which created an additional permit required for people who fished along coastal waters in the state.
