- Wash the tub or sink thoroughly with soap and water to remove any mold or dirt. Once it is completely dry, sanding is recommended prior to putting new paint on a bathtub or a sink. Use a 320-grit sandpaper to wear down any prior paint job until it gets dulled. Do not sand through the gel coat if possible. Clean the entire surface thoroughly again to remove any sanding dust. Soap and warm water works fine, or you can go with something stronger like muriatic acid. Never use turpentine, however, because it can be extremely corrosive on fiberglass.
- First apply a coat of primer that is compatible with an epoxy-based paint. Apply a medium coat with an aerosol delivery such as a spray can or an automated sprayer. It will apply the coat quicker and smoother than a brush or roller without as much running. Once one coat has been applied and dried completely, you can apply the epoxy-based paint using the same delivery method as the primer. Apply a light coat and then allow it about 48 hours to dry. Apply a second coat after that and then you can apply a finishing coat once the middle coat has dried.
Ventilate the area as much as possible while cleaning and painting, and use a mask when possible, as the fumes can be very strong and are unsafe to breathe.
