Get To Know the Fundamentals of Drawing and Painting

Understanding the fundamentals of Drawing and Painting is very important before you learn to draw and paint.  In order to create a good art work, it is important that you know the elements of art. The elements of art is the basic component of art making. You cannot produce an art without using one of the fundamentals of drawing and painting. A good artist must be capable of using the elements of art intelligently. The elements of art include:

Line:

A line is named as a moving dot in art terms. Line is used commonly when drawing an art form. Most commonly a line is used to indicate where an object ends. This type of line is named as Contour lines. These lines are mainly used to draw outlines. You can also create an illusion using lines. The quality of the line is measured by its thickness. A line helps to create shadow and form. You can use the Cross contour lines for this purpose. The line follows the contours of the object. Different kinds of lines namely vertical, diagonal, Horizontal, Zigzag, Curved etc. can be used for creating an artwork. An artist can modify the line variation which includes the length, width and the texture of the line according to the art work.

Shape:

Shape is a two-dimensional area that is defined by a change in value or some other form of contrast. All the shapes have length and width which are mostly termed to be two dimensional. There are several forms of shapes.  The geometric shapes are the common shapes which we use in are day to day activities. Examples include: circle, triangle, square etc. Organic and freeform shapes are shapes that have no rules, they are typically not man-made. The shapes that are defined by objects are known to be as positive shapes (space). Shapes defined around the objects are known to be negative shapes (space). You can create any art form using geometric and organic shapes.

Form:

When a shape gets a form it is transformed into a 3D object. The main goal to draw a form is to create an illusion. You can create an illusion only when you understand how light reacts to the object. When a light reacts on an object it can be illustrated to the viewers in various formats. The highlight, midtone, core shadow, cast shadow and reflected highlight.

Value:

Value is one of the most essential forms of art. The value mainly deals with the light and darkness of the color. A full range of value means that they are ample amounts of light values- called tints, and dark values- called shades.  Light is reflected on the objects and shows us about the form of the objects that we are seeing. Therefore, if we are to draw objects the way that we see them, we must first fully understand light and more importantly, we have to learn to create the illusion of light in our drawings.

Space:

In terms of art, space is the area around, above, and within an object. The main goal is to create the illusion of space. You can create an illusion in space by overlapping, by placing the objects within the picture plane, size, detail, color and value, perspective etc.

Color:

Color is the element of art that refers to reflected light. It is essential that every artist must understand the color theory well before drawing a picture. The color theory can be broken down into 3 parts- The color wheel, color value, and color schemes.

The Color wheel:

The color wheel is made up of three different types of colors:
  • Primary- Red, Yellow, and Blue. They are known as primary colors because no two colors can be mixed to create a primary color. Primary colors can be created using natural pigments only.
  • Secondary- Orange, Green, and Purple. You can create secondary colors by mixing equal parts of any two primary colors.  The color yellow and blue will give you green.  Red and blue will produce purple (violet). Red and yellow will create orange.
  • Tertiary- You can create tertiary color by mixing equal parts of a secondary and primary color. There are six tertiary colors- red-purple, red-orange, blue-green, yellow-green, blue-purple, and yellow-orange.

Color Schemes:

The different types of color schemes include:
  • Monochromatic- It means it is made up of one color.
  • Analogous colors- They are colors that are next to each other on the color wheel.
  • Complementary: This scheme provides a strong contrast.
  • Color Triads: consist of three colors found on the color wheel that are equally spaced apart from each other.
  • Split Complementary: color schemes are made up analogous colors. For instance: Blue, yellow-orange and red-orange.
  • Warm Colors: They are colors that are usually associated with warm and bright things. For instance yellow, orange etc.
  • Cool Colors: They are associated with cool things. For instance blue, green etc.

Texture:

It is an element of art that refers to the way an object is felt to the touch or looks as if you can feel it. The different textures that can be used include: 3D and 2D texture, Visual texture, Simulated, Invented, Rough textures, Smooth textures, Matte, Impasto texture etc.
