- 1). Apply a clear coating to unfinished cedar siding. The clear coat will help keep moisture out of the wood. This is especially a problem in Florida due to rainy weather and constant humidity. The clear coating allows the rain and condensation to run off the wood rather than absorb into it and must be reapplied every few years when you notice that the water no longer runs off your cedar siding.
- 2). Get termite inspections at least once every year. Termites are prevalent in Florida, again due to moist conditions. If you have an infestation, it must be treated right away. If you have cedar shingles, the fix may be quite simple, as you can remove only the damaged shingles and replace them.
- 3). Repair any gaps in flashing or caulking around the exterior of your home. Gaps can pose a potential problem as they allow moisture to accumulate, which can destroy your Florida cedar siding.
- 4). Use a pressure washer to clean the siding on a yearly basis. Florida is prone to mold and mildew; taking the time to pressure wash your home on a low setting will remove this hazardous gunk and brighten your home at the same time.
- 5). Repaint or stain your cedar siding every few years. This will help seal the wood to keep moisture out.
- 6). Inspect your cedar siding periodically to check for shrinkage, bloating, bowing, rot and other anomalies that occur with wood. Also check the joints and nails to make sure everything is tight and flat, as it should be. To keep Florida moisture from damaging your siding, repair any problems you find.
