How to Get a Broken Lightbulb Out

    • 1). Cut off power to the socket by switching the breaker off. If you aren't sure which breaker goes to that socket, turn off the power to the entire house to be safe. It is extremely dangerous to stick a pair of pliers or your hands into an active socket.

    • 2). Lay a towel or plastic tarp on the ground underneath the socket to catch any glass that comes off during the bulb removal.

    • 3). Put on your gloves and goggles. Insert a thin, flat head screwdriver between the broken bulb base and the socket.

    • 4). Bend the screwdriver so that the base of the handle moves toward the inside of the socket and the flat head pushes outward against the bulb base.

    • 5). Hold the screwdriver in place so that there is some room between the socket and bulb. Grip the bulb base with needle nose pliers.

    • 6). Twist the pliers counterclockwise until you loosen the bulb from the fixture. Keep twisting until you completely remove it.
