How to Create a Wedding Sand Ceremony

    • 1). Prepare the vases for the ceremony. Decide how many people will participate in the sand ceremony. Purchase that many small vases and bags of sand; ensure you at least have two colors of sand for your design. Fill the small vases, each with a different color of sand. Set up a small table at the altar containing the main large vase and the small vases filled with sand.

    • 2). Pour the first layer of sand into the large vase. The wedding officiant will introduce the sand ceremony. The groom will begin, pouring a small part of sand from one of the smaller vases into the large vase making the base. During this time the officiant might talk or the groom might want to have vows prepared for this moment. Speak with your officiant and determine which method you feel most comfortable with.

    • 3). Pour the second layer of sand. The bride will pour the next layer of sand into the large vase. She will pour a different color than the groom has already poured.

    • 4). Alternate colors of sand throughout the ceremony to make a layered effect. The bride and groom can choose to pour back and forth, each reciting vows as they pour their sand into the vase. If children and other family members will pour, they will each pour in a bit of the sand layering the colors on top of one another, signifying a blended family.

    • 5). Pour the last layer of sand into the vase. The bride and groom will pour at the same time both colors of their sand on top of the vase to create the idea that two have now become one.

    • 6). Leave about an inch of the vase to account for a cork or lid to seal the vase and protect the sand from moving during its trip to your new home.
