- 1). Acquire education in a relevant field by enrolling in a college or university offering a bachelor's degree in academic fields such as such as graphic design or print production. Note that these courses require you to engage in practical printing activities to get the most out of them.
- 2). Take up a job as an intern and gain as much technical experience as you can in production printing. It is sometimes advantageous to start in a small, less sophisticated operation so that you understand more traditional procedures for the printing process. Work on as many different types of projects as possible so that you have samples ranging from postcards to magazines.
- 3). Gain further experience in big companies in areas such as coordinating printing projects, monitoring printing systems, and collaborating with account managers and vendors. Network with production print managers in other printing companies through industry associations and with your customers to stay on top of current industry developments.
- 4). Market your services as a production print specialist by creating a website highlighting you're your portfolio. When composing a resume, emphasize innovations you made in trafficking systems and expertise in computer software, but people skills are equally important. Coordinating or supervising jobs on the factory floor requires a rapport with production workers who are often in physically demanding and repetitive-task jobs.
