Ponds And Greenhouses

Remove the pool heater and replace the pond pump in mid spring.
Start feeding fish in the pond in mid spring, as soon as they become active.
On a warm day in late spring or early summer plant up your pond or add new plants to an existing feature.
Replace tender plants that have been over wintered in a frost free place.
Make the first sowings of summer bedding plants and vegetables.
Seedlings should be picked out as soon as they are large enough to handle.
Over wintered tender plants should be given more water in mid spring to start them into growth.
New plants that were raised in a cozy environment indoors need to be hardened off before being planted out to face the harsher conditions outside.
This should start about two weeks before you plan to plant them out.
Stay vigilant for the first signs of pests and disease.
Take appropriate action as soon as you can.
Make sure the greenhouse does not over heat by ensuring there is adequate ventilation and shading.
In mid spring apply a general fertilizer to all fruit trees, bushes and canes.
Protect vulnerable early blossoms from late frosts by covering with a double layer of horticultural fleece, taking it off during the day to allow pollinating insects to get access.
Carefully prepare the area to be used as a seed bed as soon as the weather is suitable.
Cover with a sheet of clear plastic to help warm the soil and encourage weed seed to germinate.
Take off the sheet and lightly how off the weeds before sowing.
Once the harvesting of over wintered vegetables is complete, clear the ground of debris and weeds, and cultivate the soil ready for the next crop.
Hardy seedlings can be planted out from mid spring as soon as they are large enough and weather conditions allow.
Harden them off in a cold frame first.
Plant out onion sets and shallots.
In early spring place early potato tubers in a tray or an egg box, eyes uppermost to encourage them to sprout.
Wait until mid spring for main crop potatoes.
You need to plant them earlier in mid spring and main crop in late spring.
Particular tender plants should be protected with glass or plastic cloches until all threat of frost has passed.
In the vegetable garden, break the soil down to a fine tilt and rake in some general fertilizer before planting out seedlings.
