- Viruses that appear from ailments, such as colds or respiratory illnesses, cause viral conjunctivitis. Bacteria that finds its way to the eye cause bacterial conjunctivitis.
- The eye covering will appear pink or red in the beginning. There will often be itchiness, burning and general irritation. There could be some tearing and possible discharge present. Conjunctivitis generally occurs in one eye, but it can move to other. The symptoms in both viral and bacterial pink eye are similar.
- Aloe vera has been used to treat pinkeye as a home remedy. Frequent rinsing with water has been helpful in treating both kinds of conjunctivitis. Keeping the eye clean will prevent it from spreading.
- Medical treatment may be necessary if other infections or conditions are present in the body. Anti-bacterial drops and ointments will alleviate much of the discomfort.
- Pink eye is not a serious condition generally, unless other illnesses or conditions are present. It lasts from 7 to 10 days.
