Is cellulite a genuine medical condition, or yet another fear for marketing companies to feed off of and profit on by promising miracle products, creams and other cures? I was researching body image for a different article when I came across a YouTube video about celebrity cellulite.
In my naivety I actually thought it was a video about how celebrities have cellulite too (so get over it) because most women do and it's normal.
but upon closer investigation I realized that the title was: "Fat Celebrities have cellulite too -TYRA, BRITNEY ugh!" It was an entire slide show of snap shots of the cellulite on the thighs and bottoms of celebrities such as Tyra Banks, Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez, Beyonce, Kate Moss, Eva Longoria, Paris Hilton...
the list goes on.
As hard as it is to comprehend, there are people out there who are either ignorant or malicious enough to spend their spare time looking for ways to make women feel even more insecure and inadequate than they already do.
There are still women who don't know that almost every woman on earth has at least some cellulite somewhere on their bodies.
Incidentally, men also have cellulite but because they have thicker skin and their fat is stored further under the skin and deposited in different areas, their cellulite isn't as apparent.
It's sad that people subscribe to these ridiculous superficial views, and put themselves and others under constant scrutiny.
It's sad that there are women that are too scared to take their children to the lake or the beach at all for fear of wearing a bathing suit or even shorts in public; women who are too frightened to have sex with the partners who love and adore them if the lights are on or, in some cases, at all.
With war, disease, poverty and global warming etc...
you'd think we have enough real reasons to be stressed out and unhappy in life without inventing ridiculous (impossible) esthetic standards for each other to live up to, much less self mutilating and/or publicly humiliating each other over it.
Up to 90% of all women have cellulite; even the skinny ones.
And while some creams might eliminate the appearance of cellulite, nothing eliminates it, no miracle drug, cream, gel, wrap or vibrating machine will banish cellulite.
Judging a woman for her cellulite makes about as much sense as judging people for their wrinkles, gray hairs or freckles.
It is natural, it's normal and it's all part of growing up.
So put the magnifying glass away, throw on your shorts and your bikinis, get your butts outside, and enjoy life.
