- 1). Check to make sure the shotgun's chamber is clear and there is no ammunition in the magazine. Inspect the shotgun, looking for any blemishes or marks.
- 2). Sand the entire shotgun, beginning at the barrel, with 220-grit sandpaper. Go over the barrel in a circular motion and continue working until both sides of the gun have been completely smoothed out.
- 3). Wash the shotgun with dish soap. Pour a little soap on a wet rag and scrub the shotgun to remove any oil residue and also the leftover grit from the sandpaper. Dry the shotgun thoroughly with a clean rag and make sure there are no wet spots anywhere on the gun.
- 4). Tape off the areas of the shotgun that you do not want painted. Cover them with masking tape so the spray paint does not get on them. Hang the gun from a coat hanger outside for proper ventilation.
- 5). Shake the can of spray paint and begin spraying the gun with the desired color. Apply a light coat with small short bursts of spray. Avoid spending too much time in one area. Continue until the first coat has been applied. Wait 30 minutes for it to dry and apply a second coat in the exact same manner. Allow it time to properly dry before touching the gun.
