How to Plan a Fishing Trip

    • 1). Choose a location for your fishing trip. How far you go will depend on whether it is a day trip or an extended trip. Also consider whether you want to catch a particular type of fish, as different fishes populate different lakes and rivers.

    • 2). Decide where you will stay on your fishing trip. Consider a lodge, hotel or campground, and base your decision on cost, where the docks are located and where you can launch your boat.

    • 3). Ask potential lodges, hotels or campgrounds questions about the best season to fish there to help you determine the dates for your fishing trip.

    • 4). Make a list of supplies you will need for your fishing trip, including tackle, bait, rods, fishing net and an icebox if you plan to keep the fish you catch. If you are camping, you will also need supplies such as a tent, sleeping bag, flashlight, cooking stove, firewood and matches. And if you are taking your boat, bring along gas, life jackets, an anchor and paddles.

    • 5). Gather the necessary paperwork for your fishing trip, including the appropriate fishing license for your chosen location, your driver's license and boat registration. Find out ahead of time what other documents you need for your specific fishing trip location.
