How to Make a Roller Blind

    • 1). Measure your window. You can measure the length and width for outside or inside mount. Inside mount is a more preferred option for it will keep the roller blind from dislodging from frequent use. When measuring for inside mount, make sure to make room for the mounting hardware approximately 1/4 of an inch on each side give or take.

    • 2). Purchase materials. You can buy roller blind kits from home improvement stores, window treatments stores or fabric stores. Purchase the fabric based on your measurement multiplied by 2. This way you have extra in case of mistakes or you can use for matching decorative items to be used in the room, for example a decorative pillow case or a tablecloth for a small round accent table.

    • 3). Install the mounting hardware then try the roller on. Remove the roller and lay it on the table.

    • 4). Pre-wash the fabric and use a fabric stiffener to harden and strengthen the fabric. This is a must for softer or thinner type of fabric.

    • 5). Mark the width of the fabric against the roller. Place the fabric at the top center of the roller holding it temporarily in place with tape. Mark both ends right before the hardware sticks out, this will give enough room for the blind to roll up and down smoothly. Add 1 inch seam allowance. Mark the length all the way down to the window sill, adding extra 2 inches at the bottom to be folded and seamed where the wooden dowel will be inserted later on. Once you have done the measurements, remove the tape from the roller then lay down your fabric on a flat surface.

    • 6). Cut the fabric using sharp scissors. Make sure not to cut off the seam allowances.

    • 7). Fold the seam allowances on each side and then use either an iron-on adhesive, spray on fabric adhesive or fabric glue to keep them in place. You can sew it too but for a more seamless look, these types of adhesives are perfect.

    • 8). Fold the bottom part and then using the same adhesives to connect the end on the 2-inch mark leaving holes on each end for the wooden dowel to go through.

    • 9). Place the top part of the fabric on the top middle portion of the roller. Use strips of double-sided tape to secure the fabric onto the roller.

    • 10

Measure the length of the wooden dowel against the width of the fabric. You can cut the dowel to size based on the measurement.

    • 11

Insert the wooden dowel at the bottom folded part. The wooden dowel will prevent the fabric from twisting and folding when the roller blind is in use.

    • 12

Pull the cord and test the roller blind. See to it that it rolls up and down smoothly. Make adjustments as needed.

    • 13

Add embellishments. You can add decorative rope, cord, ribbon or tassels at the bottom part of the roller blind to make it more unique and attractive--giving it a more finished look. Use colors the either match or complement your decor. You can attach them using a glue gun.
