- D-Con is one of the most well known rodent control products available today and is available in a wide variety of solutions for mice and rat infestation problems based in two broad categories: baits and traps.
Not all rodent infestations are the same depending on the situation, so the most effective solution may differ. - D-Con bait solutions are recommended for consumers who do not want to see the dead mice or rats but wish to eliminate the infestation. Baits can be used in combination with traps, but baits can be placed on their own to achieve the desired effect of rodent elimination.
Baits differ from traps in eliminating rodents through the ingestion of chemicals that are harmful to the rodents. The active ingredient of d-Con baits is brodifacoum, an anticoagulant commonly used in pesticides, which inhibits the rodents' abilities to digest food and water, making the rodents become starved and dehydrated after eating enough bait.
While the d-Con bait line is unlikely to cause any harmful affects to humans, they should be kept away from children and pets nonetheless.
D-Con traps are recommended for consumers who need a confirmation of one or more rodents that are infesting your home or building. With d-Con's trap line, rodents are enter the trap and stopped from leaving it, eventually starving them to death.
Traps are further divided into two categories: bait traps and baitless or "glue" traps. In the traps that use bait, a bait is placed in the middle of the device to lure the rodent into the trap. Generally the bait is either cheese or peanut butter, but ultimately can be any food that a rodent would be attracted to; d-Con also makes bait for traps.
Baitless traps use glue to trap rodents. Optimal use of baitless traps occurs in areas where the rodents are believed to be walking. - D-Con traps can be made more effective given certain variables such as the amount of hiding places in a building where the rodents can avoid the traps, the amount of available food left for rodents in a building, as well as methods for the rodent to escape and reenter the building.
