    Replacing Sugar

    • Regular sugar causes the blood sugar levels in the body to rise quickly and then drop just as quickly. Once the blood sugar drops, the body craves an instant sugar boost in order to raise the levels again. This blood-sugar roller coaster causes people to eat more than they need to and to eat foods with refined sugars that contain empty calories.

      Pies, cakes and other desserts can be created using alternative sweeteners that will not raise blood sugars. Agave nectar is a natural sweeter that is not produced chemically but is taken from the agave plant. It is incredibly sweet but does not raise blood sugar, which can help to keep people from consuming too many calories.

    Reducing Fat

    • Fat can be reduced in normal recipes in many ways. Replacing cream in recipes with non-fat milk, replacing butter with applesauce in baked goods, and steaming vegetables and meats instead of oiling or buttering them are all helpful ways to reduce your overall daily fat intake. Because fat contains a high amount of calories, reducing fat intake can help lower the total caloric intake as well.

    Reducing Salt

    • Salt causes many people's blood pressure to rise, and excessive salt intake has been associated with heart disease, diabetes and a higher risk for heart attack and stroke. Eating too much salt causes the body to retain water, which can cause weight gain. By reducing or eliminating the salt in recipes, people will still enjoy delicious recipes without consuming excess salt. Cut salt in recipes by at least half to keep the body from retaining water weight. If salt has been used too much before it has been cut, weight will noticeably start to drop when salt intake is curbed. This is a good indication that your salt intake was too high.
