The world of sport has given us many a great athlete and some of them have given us unforgettable moments. Athletes such as Usain Bolt and Kobe Bryant are leaders in their own fields and have performed incredible miracles on the field. However, footballers are a breed of their own and over the years, several great footballers have graced us with their presence. Every country has its own share of greats and each of them are legends in their own right. These greats played with poise, skill and freedom which most people can only dream of having.
Pele
He was arguably the best player of his generation. Pele was a footballer who had it all, the magical touch, nimble footwork, great ball skill and outstanding eye for goal. He is one of the few players to have scored more than 1000 goals in his career. He invariably saved his best for the World Cup and guides his country to several moments of glory. He played for Santos and New York Cosmos.
Garrincha
Not many people would remember Garrincha and he hasnâEUR(TM)t had the recognition he deserves. He was probably the best winger of his period and his pace and skill was unmatched. Having learnt his trade on the streets of Brazil he became one of the most feared players Brazil ever produced. However, it is sad that he died on the streets as a poor man and with a serious alcoholism issue. ItâEUR(TM)s a pity that a great footballer like Garrincha had to meet such an end. His funeral procession was met by thousands of people and banners such as âEUR~thank you for having livedâEUR(TM) were seen everywhere.
Maradonna
Maradonna was more of a pop star than a footballer but he was surely one of the greatest players of his time. The little forward is said to be in the same class Pele. However, his career and subsequent life has been marred by drug and marital problems and this has reduced his legend to some extent.
Sir Bobby Charlton and Franz Beckenbaur
Very few defenders make the list of great players these days but these two gentlemen were among the best in the world. Franz Beckenbaur was feared for his attacking ability as much as he was for his defending. And of course, you donâEUR(TM)t get a knighthood unless you have done something great do you?
