- 1). Watch the entire anime series. If you have already watched the series, watch it again. Review the 26 episodes and get a feel for the ambiance of the series. Pay close attention to the mixture of humorous and serious elements. The story's seriousness -- the quest for the sunflower samurai -- takes precedence, but along the journey, the characters sometimes become cartoonishly lighthearted.
- 2). Read the two volumes of manga if possible. Take note of the way the artist expresses the characters. The samurai battles feature characters who splash their swords across the page. During the journey's interludes, characters briefly look bizarre when the mood is light. Consider Fuu in her brief "fat Fuu" appearances after she overeats.
- 3). Write your character's biography. Include details such as the character's gender, age, physical characteristics, occupation and past. If your character is a samurai or another type of warrior, think of his weaponry and battle skills. Consider how your character might interact with Fuu, Mugen and Jin. The character may also seek the sunflower samurai for his own reasons. (Spoiler: Consider the sunflower samurai's status as a Christian and betrayer of the Shogunate when you decide why your character may seek him.)
- 4). Draw your character. Design a character that aptly fits into the "Samurai Champloo" world of Edo-period Japan. If you do not have adequate art skills to draw an original image, print out an image of a character from "Samurai Champloo" that is the same gender as your character. Trace over the basic outline of the character. Change her hair and clothing in your drawing.
- 5). Employ the character in your work. Create both original adventures and adventures in which your character interacts with characters from the "Samurai Champloo" series.
