- 1). Check the lymph nodes in your neck. Infections cause lymph nodes to swell and become painful. This is an early signal that the knot on your chin may be an infection. Infections can be treated easily with antibiotics from your doctor.
- 2). Figure out if you have allergies to any bugs. Some people have serious allergic reactions to bug bites. Bites swell much larger if you have an allergy than it would on non-allergic people. You may need to take an antihistamine.
- 3). Clean the knot with alcohol wipes and apply antibiotic ointment and a bandage if the lump is caused by an abrasion to the skin. This happens when you scrape your chin on a rough surface and break the skin.
- 4). Contact your doctor if the lump has been there for more than a week or if the lump is on a child. Lumps that grow or become more painful need immediate attention. In rare cases, the lumps are tumors and must be biopsied to see if they are cancerous.
- 5). Call 911 if you have a knot on your chin from hitting your head and are feeling dizzy, nauseous or pass out. You could have internal bleeding caused by a concussion.
