How to Air Brush Flames & Lightning

    Lightning

    • 1). Place an image of lightning in an easy to view location.

    • 2). Set the air brush air pressure to about 45 lbs.

    • 3). Create the lighting by spraying on a bright white line. Spray uneven lines and have smaller lines extend out to represent lightning bolts.

    • 4). Add color lightning colors on top such as blue or purple. Repeat the process by holding the air brush closer to create tighter lines.

    Flames

    • 1). Place an image of flames in an easy to view location.

    • 2). Set the air brush air pressure to about 45 lbs.

    • 3). Sketch out teardrop shaped outlines for the flames of varies sizes that overlapped each other with a pencil.

    • 4). Spray difference values of paint to fill in the outlines. Start with a transparent red layer and then deepen the color by adding a layer of a candy red and then transparent orange.

    • 5). Use a French curve template to sharpen the flames and add shadows. Start with candy orange to deepen the color spraying around the curve edges. Blend in with red and then with a mixture of white and a candy yellow to help sharpen and add highlights.

    • 6). Go back over with yellow to blend and remove any white and then with candy orange to blend in the candy yellow.

    • 7). Adjust as needed using the background to cover up any mistakes and to help keep the edges sharp.
