Side Effects of Yasmin Birth Control Pill

    Overview

    • Yasmin is a brand name birth control product that is made of drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol. The drug is also marketed under the brand names Yaz and Ocella. Like all medications, there are some risks and possible side effects associated with using Yasmin as birth control. Knowing the risks and understanding what side effects to look for helps women use the drug safely. Not everyone experiences these side effects, but for those who do, recognizing the symptoms and stopping use of the drug early is important.

    Preliminary Considerations

    • Women should not take Yasmin if they are allergic to either Drospirenone or Ethinyl Estradiol, since those are the two ingredients of the drug. Those who have a history of diabetes, stroke or circulatory problems should also avoid Yasmin, as should anyone who suffers from migraine headaches or uncontrolled blood pressure. If you are considering Yasmin as an option, inform your doctor of any instances you have had involving blood pressure, diabetes, kidney, liver or the gallbladder, as your condition may preclude you from using Yasmin as birth control.

    Minor Side Effects

    • Not all side effects experienced on Yasmin are major. Those using Yasmin birth control pills may experience a number of minor side effects, such as breast pain, swelling or tenderness. The pill may also cause physical changes, such as darkening of the skin, faster-growing hair and the appearance of skin freckles. Women using Yasmin may notice swelling in the hands and feet, and contact lens prescriptions sometimes require modification once the pill is used. Other minor side effects of using the Yasmin birth control pill are a change in weight and lighter or less frequent menstrual periods.

    Major Side Effects

    • Some people will experience major side effects when taking Yasmin. An immediate visit to the nearest emergency room is recommended if any of these side effects are experienced when taking the birth control pill. The most serious are swelling in the throat, tongue or face, which causes difficulty in breathing. Yasmin can cause pain behind the eyes in some women, as well as blurred vision. Sudden pain, numbness, weakness and confusion are also symptoms experienced by some individuals. Others may experience chest pain, stomach pain or systems of deep depression.
