How to Shock a Swimming Pool After Opening

    • 1). Pour water from the pool or a garden hose into a 5-gallon bucket. Fill the bucket to the halfway point.

    • 2). Pour granular shock into the bucket of water slowly. Stir the granular shock inside the bucket with an oversize spoon or other suitable utensil until a large portion of the chemical is dissolved in the water. A common ratio of shock chemical to pool size is 1 lb. of shock per 10,000 gallons of water inside the swimming pool.

    • 3). Slowly pour all the liquid in the 5-gallon bucket into the swimming pool water while moving around the perimeter of the swimming pool to maximize the initial coverage area of the chemical.

    • 4). Add more water to the bucket once the initial dosage is applied. Repeat the stirring and application process until no undissolved shock remains in the bucket.

    • 5). Run the swimming pool filter on the "Circulate" or "Filter" setting. Take a pool brush and stir any undissolved shock granules on the pool floor.
