How to Take Excellent Care of Guinea Pig Babies!

Guinea pigs are the most adorable creatures that you can have as your pet.
They do not scream, bite, or demand so much from you unlike other domesticated animals.
However, taking care of these gentle creatures also needs a lot of lessons to be learned so that you will be able to impart the ideal amount of love and attention to them.
Today, you will be learning more about guinea pig babies and how you should take good care of them.
Female guinea pigs are called sows, while the male ones are termed as boars.
About a month after a couple is mated, the female guinea pig will start to manifest signs of pregnancy.
You should put a lot of attention and care in to her during these times until her babies are born.
Guinea pig babies are called pups, and once they are born, you should ensure a warm environment for them.
Add more hays or make a small hut out of cardboard and newspapers to house them.
Keep them away from water containers or any sharp objects inside the cage because they still have delicate skin and they are usually hairless at birth.
There is nothing to protect them from extreme temperatures and objects that might injure them.
You do not have to worry on what to feed the pups, because the mother will nourish them like all other land mammals do.
But in some cases, the little pups will start eating the hay or the pellets a day after they were born.
If you are planning to separate them from their mother, do not do it until they are about six weeks old because they still need the warmth and comfort of their mother.
Moreover, they should be weaned by their mother until they will learn to eat fully on their own.
If you are eager to determine whether the guinea pig babies are males or females, you cannot determine the sex at birth.
You need to wait until they are mature enough at about eight to ten weeks.
Do not attempt to push their abdomen to look for the genitals because you might be causing some pain.
The pups will start to grow their coat right after birth, and you can fully determine their color at about two to three weeks.
You need to continue to give them a warm environment until they are fully wrapped in their coat.
There are some instances when the mother and the father will mate again, even if the first set of pups is still young.
When this happens, you need to split the pups from their pregnant mother, especially during the time when she is nearing her term of giving birth.
Pregnant females feel uncomfortable seeing their first set of pups and carrying another set in her womb.
But if you do not want this to happen, you should separate the father from the mother right after the latter gives birth so that she can attend to the needs of the new guinea pig babies with ease.
