When I think about the tragic condition we have left our planet in, due to our selfish pursuit of profit first and our continual lack of respect and reverence for what nature has given us - my heart drops and ponders why.
For over 30 years ago, Marvin Gaye, in his epic R&B classic "Mercy Mercy Me", poetically and vocally, challenged us as custodians of this earthly place - to stop the abuse, stop the pollution, stop the degradation of our earthly home - that we might exchange poison in the air for blue skies - oil wasted in the seas for seas full of bounty - radiation underground and in the sky for animals and birds that could live and fly.
Marvin was painting a world as it should be, not as it was.
As we strive for efficiencies and economies and a more engaged world via digital technology - let us not forget our greater responsibility to live lives free from man induced attacks on our persons and our earthly nature.
It is our ultimate task, to leave this world environmentally clean and green - fit for our children and our children's children, for generations to come.
We can do better - if we would just think about our children.
We can do better - if we think about the legacy that we would be leaving.
We can do better - if we think about the welfare of all and not just ourselves.
We have safe places for those in need, shelters for those in distress, chemical relief programs for those in addiction, hospitals and therapy for those afflicted - along with churches, synagogues and temples for those who pursue a faith - yet we lack no central targeted movement towards saving our planet from the threat of environmental destruction.
I invite you to develop and adopt a new environmental focus - whereby you will attempt to practice new habits that will aid in making our planet - the home that it was meant to be.
Share your practice, first within your own family, then with your neighbors.
Just hum the words from Marvin's tune - "Mercy Mercy Me, ah things ain't what they used to be where did all the blue skies go? poison is in the wind that blows from the north south and east" Then ask your self - why should this be? Don't stand for any type of abuse!
