These sorts of initiation requirements that are used to gain entry into an organization are known as "hazing.
" Hazing is widespread, even outside the college scene.
It can cause physical and emotional harm to the individuals participating, their friends and family, and those affected by these inappropriate actions.
Even if the methods used in hazing are not illegal, the fact that they are required may be illegal in and of in itself.
A business that requires a person to participate in an activity that has nothing to do with their job or is physically or emotionally abusing is guilty of unlawfully using hazing.
There are five main organizations that have been known to use hazing as a method of admission.
These include:
- Fraternities and sororities
- Military
- Athletic teams
- Gangs
- Workplaces
Participating in dangerous actions such as diving off cliffs or drinking a large amount of alcohol will also be considered illegal.
Sexual harassment can be required of individuals to prove their dedication to an organization.
Verbal harassment such as bullying or sexual harassment are also common examples of hazing rituals.
Often times hazing goes unreported due to the fact that those participating will most likely have a strong desire to join the organization.
However, if the boundaries extend too far, people may come forward.
Reporting hazing can cause the the organization to be dissolved or pay a large amount of fines for their actions.
