- 1). Navigate to your email inbox and select the email you want to trace by clicking it. Press the drop-down button next to "Reply" or click "View More Options." Click "Show Original" or "View Header" to view the entire header of the email. Select any option to view the "Message Header" if these options are not available.
- 2). Look for the line that begins with "Received" to view the sender's IP address information. Locate the IP address next to the sender's email address. Write the IP address down or copy and paste it to a Word document.
- 3). Locate an IP search website by typing "Find IP Address" into your favorite search engine or navigating directly to the website. Type in or copy and paste the IP address into the search box and press "Search." Copy and paste the header into the box if the tracing program requires the entire header and press "Trace Email Sender."
- 4). View the sender's information by reading through the results that appear. The results will display the Internet provider and city and state that the email originated or where the Internet service provider is located. An address may also be available if the sender is a business. A map will generally be included to show you exactly where the IP address originated.
