- Families can receive food stamps for themselves and any minor children, under the age of 21, living in the home. Individuals who have not yet turned 18 may also apply for food stamps in Greene County if they do not reside with their parents. All applicants, regardless of age, must be either United States citizens, United States Nationals or qualified aliens.
- All residents of Greeneville between the ages of 16 and 59 must be willing to work. The Department of Human Services will require able bodied individuals to either register for work or complete an Employment & Training Program. If the individuals are offered a job, they cannot refuse it and still still be eligible for food stamps. The same goes if applicants are currently employed and quit their jobs. After a period of five months, applicants currently receiving food stamps must work at least 80 hours per month to continue receiving their food stamp benefits.
- Applicants are restricted in the amount of resources they can have when applying for food stamps in Greene County. Average families may not have cash or savings accounts that are in excess of $2,000. That figure is increased by $1,000 if a family member is disabled or over the age of 60. Other resources Tenessee Department of Human Services takes into account are CDs, bonds, stocks, checking account funds and properties owned that are not currently being sold (with the exception of your primary residence).
- Food stamp applications can either be filled out online at the Tennessee Department of Human Services website or at Greene County's food stamp office located at 128 Serral Drive. Applications must be completely filled out. Accompanying the applications must be proof of identity, income documentation, a utility bill to prove residency, resource documentation and proof of current expenses. Once applications have been submitted, a decision will be made within the next 45 days.
