How to Make a Shower Curtain from Old Drapes

    • 1). Measure the length and width of your shower opening. Add 16 inches to the length and 20 inches to the width. These are the measurements of the fabric you will need.

    • 2). Lay your old drapes on the floor and measure their length and height. If you can get a piece of fabric the size you need out of one panel, that will be great, but you probably will not be able to. From one curtain panel, cut a rectangle one-half the width and the total length that you need. Cut another rectangle exactly the same size from another panel.

    • 3). Pin the rectangles of fabric together along one long edge using straight pins. The pieces of fabric should have their right sides facing; that is, the sides of the fabric that will face outward when the shower curtain is finished should be facing each other with the raw edges even. Place the pins about 4 inches apart and perpendicular to the raw edges.

    • 4). Sew 5/8-inch from the raw edges, forming a seam along the length of the fabric. Use a sewing machine and matching thread. Remove the pins before the presser foot goes over them to avoid breaking the needle. Use an iron to press the seam open.

    • 5). Create a hem on each long side. Fold the fabric 2 inches in from the edge and press.

    • 6). Fold that hem over another 2 inches to create a double hem. Use an iron to press this seam as well.

    • 7). Pin the hem with straight pins placed perpendicular to the edge at 4-inch intervals. Stitch the hem closed with the sewing machine. Repeat on the other side of the shower curtain.

    • 8). Create a 4-inch-wide double hem at the bottom of the shower curtain using the procedure above.

    • 9). Iron a 4-inch strip of medium-weight fusible interfacing to the wrong side of the top of the shower curtain. Create and sew a 4-inch double hem.

    • 10

Mark with the fabric marker the placement of the buttonholes for the curtain hooks at the top of the shower curtain. Place your starting marks 3 inches in from each side and ½ inch down from the top of the shower curtain. Shower curtains generally have 12 curtain hooks. Distribute the marks for the other 10 equally along the top edge, again ½-inch down from the top.

    • 11

sew 12 vertical ¾-inch-long buttonholes at each mark following the buttonhole instructions provided by the manufacturer of your sewing machine.
