The Louisiana DMV's Road Rules for Tractors

Similarities to Road Rules for Normal Vehicles

    • Tractors and other farm equipment are required to stop at all railroad crossings. Operators of farm tractors must signal turns by hand and arm signs, visible to the front and the rear, if the equipment is not outfitted with electronic turn indicators. Operators of farm equipment who fail to drive in a prudent and careful manner on a public road may receive a careless operation citation.

    Equipment

    • All farm tractors and other forms of self-propelled farm equipment not previously equipped with an electrical lighting system must be equipped with a minimum of one front lamp projecting a white light and at least one rear lamp projecting a red light. Two reflectors are also required on the rear. If the tractor does not normally operate at speeds exceeding 25 miles per hour, it must be outfitted with a slow-moving vehicle emblem.

    Operations

    • Low-speed vehicles, such as farm equipment, are permitted for continuous use on roads, highways or divided highways where the posted speed limit is 35 miles per hour or less. Farm equipment can only intersect a road under the same circumstances. These vehicles are may be operated on the shoulders of public roads and highways, but not interstate highways. Off-road vehicles intended for farm use may operate on the shoulder within a five-mile radius of the owner's farm.

    Exemptions

    • A Louisiana driver's license is not required if temporarily operating a farm tractor or other farm machinery on a highway. Farm equipment and agricultural vehicles are not required to meet the state's height, width and length limitations if being used for normal farm operations and not traveling more than 50 miles from their point of origin. Farm vehicles are permitted to use any highway 30 minutes after sunrise and 30 minutes before sunset without needing a special permit.
