- The L-1 visa is available to employees of multinational businesses that have operations in the United States. An L-1 visa allows those workers to come here to work for that specific company.
- The L-1 holder's family can either accompany her to the United States on L-2 visas or come later.
- Applicants for an L-2 visa must furnish proof of the relationship to the L-1 holder. This can include wedding photographs, a copy of a marriage certificate and copies of tax forms.
- A spouse and children on L-2 visas can remain in the United States as long as the L-1 holder is permitted to stay, usually up to seven years. They are free to travel in and out of the country.
- L-2 holders can study at U.S. colleges and universities and, like L-1 holders, can apply for permanent resident status. L-2 spouses can also apply for a work permit.
- Applications are taken at U.S. embassies and consulates; the L-1 holder's company will often handle the paperwork.
