- 1). Pour 3/4 cup dry baking soda down the drain. Pour a small amount at a time so that the drain fills with the baking soda and it does not back up into the sink or tub.
- 2). Pour 1/2 cup vinegar down the drain. Immediately seal the drain with a stopper plug or a rag so that the carbon dioxide gas does not escape and instead penetrates the hair.
- 3). Wait 30 minutes or so. Remove the stopper or rag. Pour a quart or more boiling water down the drain. Repeat if necessary to clear stubborn clogs.
- 4). Remove the drain plug and thread a drain snake or auger into the pipe if repeated treatments with baking soda and vinegar do not work. Call a plumber if all attempts at removing the clog are unsuccessful. Inform the plumber that you have used baking soda and vinegar so that he does not use a chemical that could react with the residue.
