- 1). Determine if a joystick could make playing easier for you. A joystick can make just about any type of game easier to play. Whether it's an RPG (Role Playing Game) or a flight simulator, a joystick could help. However, if your game has too many hot keys and buttons to push, then a joystick would only make things harder.
- 2). Determine if the help a joystick would provide is worth the cost. If you are going to get a cheap joystick, then the cost might not be an issue. However, if you have a complex game that requires one of the more expensive joysticks, then you might have to think about your budget.
- 3). Pick out the joystick you want to buy. Sometimes, the cheapest or most appealing one might be the one to buy. However, you need to make sure that the joystick you pick out is compatible with your computer and your game. Look at the computer requirements for the joystick, which are usually found on the back or bottom of the package. Make sure that you read the package carefully. How many buttons can you program? Does your computer meet the minimum requirements? Does your computer exceed the minimum requirements by a lot?
- 4). Decide where you want to get your joystick. You can buy a joystick online, at any big retail store that sells electronics or at any electronics store (see Resources below). Video and video game stores sometimes sell game accessories also, you might be able to find a joystick there as well.
