- Persin is the potentially toxic substance substance found in avocado. Guatemalan avocados, the ones found in stores, pose the biggest threat.
- The problems that have been reported between dogs and avocados have occurred when a dog has eaten a fallen fruit off of the ground beneath a tree. Problems have not been reported with dogs eating food that contains avocado.
- AvoDerm dog food does, in fact, contain avocado meal and avocado oil. However, they are the seventh and tenth ingredients listed, and it is possible that there is not enough in each serving to cause a problem.
- Avocado toxicity has not been studied. Persin is known to be present in the leaves, fruit, bark and seeds of the avocado, but it may be destroyed or rendered inert by the cooking process dog food must undergo.
- Some dog owners have been feeding their dogs avocado for years because of the healthy gloss it imparts to the coat, and have never had a problem. Many dogs eat avocado without any issues at all. Avocado toxicity is rare, but it does exist, and it is impossible to know which dog will be affected.
