- Requirements vary from state to state but at the very least you will need the year, make and model of the car as well as the VIN number, which is located on the metal VIN tag on the driver's side dashboard near the windshield. Some states require a copy of the car's registration or a copy of your driver's license. In states where insurance is mandatory, you may be required to present proof of insurance.
- Call your county clerk's office to be directed to the proper authority. Titles generally are a function of the Secretary of State's office. If your state has a Department of Motor Vehicles, begin there.
- Fees vary by state. In Illinois a duplicate title costs $65, in North Carolina, $15, and in Texas, $2.
