The research, which was conducted at the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom, looked into the number of crashes that had occurred due to eating while driving. The results of the study surprised everyone participating. They showed that eating snacks while driving was a significantly more dangerous activity to engage in than drunk driving. It showed that a person's reaction times were much more delayed when they were eating behind the wheel. The results showed that snacking was even more dangerous than if the driver had a blood-alcohol level of 0.08 percent.

An intoxicated driver with a blood-alcohol level of more than .08% has a delayed response time of about 12.5%. Whereas, the response time of a person who is consuming food while driving has a delayed response time of about 44%. This is usually caused by the driver only having one hand on the wheel while driving and not paying attention to the road.

This means that although driving while intoxicated by a few alcoholic beverages gets the bigger claim to fame, driving while eating is far more dangerous. Someone who is drinking a beverage and driving risks delaying their response time by about 22%.

The problem with eating and driving is that the driver will be paying more attention to their food than the road and may only have one hand on the wheel or their eyes away from the other traffic on the road. These things significantly decrease response times. Generally food that is eaten in the car comes with wrappers and napkins. These items can fall onto the floor or the driver could drip food onto their clothes which causes them to become distracted by the food and not pay attention to what is happening around them. Sometimes, they may even become distracted by trying to find a paper napkin to wipe up a spill.

In the United States, the authority figures of all of the major transportation departments tend to focus on the dangers that cellphones present on the roads. However, they very rarely mention the dangers presented by food in the car. It is, of course, problematic to only focus on food or only on cellphones when both present such hazards for all motorists. This study shows that eating while driving merits the same focus from the media and the public that texting and driving has received.
