Pharmacologic Treatment of Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis

Conclusion

The development of effective pharmacologic therapy for the treatment of IPF is a major step forward in our battle against this deadly disease. Practitioners are caught in the conundrum of which drug to prescribe in countries where both are available. There are numerous considerations and many unanswered questions that need to be entertained while maintaining our patients' interests foremost. It is our hope that this review will provide guidance in this brave new world of effective drug therapy for IPF. Additionally, we hope the successful drug development programs for pirfenidone and nintedanib will provide an impetus for further RCTs of other novel therapies as we continue on the ever winding and hopefully widening road of drug discovery for this deadly disorder.
