Caring for the Shades

While there are several materials used to manufacture sunglass frames -- plastic and basic metal to specialty lightweight metals such as titanium and stainless steel -- select a frame that your face and eyes find comfortable. Top brands include D&G, Prada, Dior, Bulgari, Mont Blanc, Gucci, DKNY, Oakley, and Ray-Ban. In addition to regular designer shades, you can also opt for designer sunglasses with polycarbonate, mirrored, plastic, glass, polarized, photochromic, and gradient lenses.

A close-fitting pair of wrap-around sunglasses provides the best protection. Choose a frame with a shape that is the opposite of your face. If you have an angular face, you'll look better in a rounder frame and a round face looks best in angular and square shaped glasses. In addition, you can also opt for some designer sunglasses that are all the rage these days. In the final analysis, what matter is whether you like what you see in the mirror with the sunglasses on. If you do, that's the best way to home in on the particular pair of branded or designer shades for you.

Sunglasses may get damaged while cleaning, so clean them gently. It's not necessary to purchase any special tools or products to do a proper job. You can simply use soap water and the smooth piece of cloth that came with your pair. While cleaning, hold your pair with one hand and use the other to gently buff the lenses in a circular motion. Do not press them too hard or hold the frame by the fag end of the side arms, since that could cause the hinges to bend. Never rest your lenses on top of your head. This can spoil the shape of the temples and/or even break the frame.

Wash your lens cloth regularly, to keep it clean. Use mild soap without fabric softener or other additives. Some cleaners may contain or recommend vinegar, but this should never be used on plastic lenses. Use vinegar only with glass lenses. For a crystal-clear finish, use a dab of alcohol and a second nonabrasive buffing cloth to remove any soap spots. In the case of designer sunglasses or those with any coating, take them off when using a hair spray lest the coating gets damaged.

Do not keep your expensive pair on the dashboard in your car. Use the glove compartment to keep it safe. Also, get a hard case for your pair, some really good ones are available at reasonable prices. Branded and designer shades such as Bulgari, D&G, Prada, and Dior are also often accompanied by a comprehensive one-year warranty.

When not using it, store your pair in a hard case. This protects them in case the case is dropped, or if it dashes against other items inside a drawer or a purse. Do not place the pair with the glass side down. Make sure you clean your spectacles on a regular basis. Also ensure that you clean not only the lenses but also the temples. Finally, do not hang a single temple outside your shirt or coat pocket. There's a chance that it might get yanked and therefore break.
