- There are four types of fungal infections. Fungal ball infection is a growth of fungi in the cheek sinus. Allergic fungal sinusitis is the most common type, and is triggered by common fungi in the environment. Acute and chronic invasive sinusitis involve pervasive growth of fungi in the sinuses and surrounding bone.
- According to Dr. Dan Carothers with the American Rhinologic Society, the latest procedure to cure fungal ball treatment is endoscopic sinus surgery. This is a minimally invasive procedure that uses a thin endoscopic tube to enter through the nose and remove the fungal growth.
- Allergic fungal sinusitis is more difficult to permanently cure, because the molds that trigger it are found in homes and buildings. Endoscopic surgery is used to remove the fungal growths, but recurrence of the growths is likely, according to the American Rhinologic Society. Eliminating exposure to the molds completely will stop the infection from returning.
- Acute and chronic fungal sinusitis can be fatal and are often found in people with compromised immune systems. Treatments include surgery and anti-fungal medications.
- Ignoring the symptoms of sinus infections can allow the infection to spread to the bone or eyes. In severe cases of sinusitis, permanent blindness or death can occur.
