Setting Up a Sand Filter to an Above-Ground Pool

    • 1). Place the sand filter on level ground about 2 feet away from the pool pump and 2 feet away from the return jet valve on the sidewall of the above-ground pool. Unplug the electrical cord to disconnect power to the pool pump.

    • 2). Attach a piece of pool hose on the outlet valve of the pool pump. The outlet valve is on the left side of the pump. Attach the opposite end of the hose to the inlet valve on the sand filter. The inlet valve is on the right side of the sand filter. Secure both ends of the hose, using a hose clamp on each end. Tighten the hose clamp with a flat-head screwdriver.

    • 3). Connect a second piece of pool hose to the outlet valve on the sand filter. The outlet valve is on the front of the filter, toward the top of the tank. Connect the opposite end of the pool hose to the return jet valve on the sidewall of the pool. Secure the hose to each valve with two more hose clamps.

    • 4). Plug the electrical cord back in to restore power to the pump. Allow the pump to fill the filter tank for five minutes.

    • 5). Pour pool-grade sand media into the pool skimmer. The pool's capacity in gallons determines the amount of sand you'll need. Refer to the sand package for the exact amount needed. Pour the sand in slowly and allow the pump to push the sand into the filter.
