Exploring the world is often an inspiring and amazing experience, but for those who choose to travel alone there are some destinations that really do make things difficult, and the way this happens can vary across the world. From travel restrictions and limits about who can visit which areas of the country, to countries that are downright dangerous and can be particularly threatening to individuals who are exploring by themselves.
Here are five places where solo travelers should definitely do their homework, and consider taking steps to limit the risks to their health and safety.
Saudi Arabia
The heart of the Muslim world lies in Mecca, while the important religious site of Medina is also located within the country, along with the Nabatean tombs found at Madain Saleh, which are almost as impressive as those in Petra, Jordan. Despite the amazing attractions here, there are significant travel restrictions in place for those visiting Saudi Arabia, and the fact that women aren't allowed to drive in the country makes it particularly tough for the female tourist. There is also segregation in many parts of society, including in restaurants, coffee shops, museums and even hotels, with sections for single men, single women and families all enforced.
Belize
With a Caribbean coastline, a series of great beaches and a selection of Mayan ruins there is plenty of potential for tourism to flourish in this Central American country, but domestic problems and crime actually make it a dangerous place to visit.
A lack of tolerance and the fact that many homosexual acts are banned by law make it an unwelcoming place for anyone in the LGBT community, while there is also a significant amount of gang violence and drug activity. Belize City is a destination that is included on many cruise ship itineraries, but there are significant problems of pickpocketing, robbery and assault that can happen there.
Brazil
Brazil is one of South America's most popular tourist destinations, and with attractions such as the Amazon Rainforest, the epic Iguazu Falls and the beautiful and vibrant beaches of Rio, it is no surprise that it does draw a fair amount of visitors. Unfortunately, many areas of Brazil do suffer with extreme poverty, and fourteen of the top fifty most violent cities in the world are located there. There are also a range of different scams and con tricks that are commonly used to fleece visitors of their cash, so it is vital to research the places you are planning to visit, and to make sure that you stay out of any favela slum districts as these will often be the most dangerous.
South Africa
Like many countries in Africa, poverty is one of the largest problems here, and solo visitors can find themselves targeted because they are more vulnerable than those traveling in groups. Violence is a problem in many of the poorer areas, known as townships, and crimes such as carjacking, theft and pickpocketing are common, and can happen in some of the international airports as well as in many other areas around the country.
The Bahamas
This beautiful Caribbean destination is one that draws many visitors, but behind the veneer of beaches, rum and water sports, there are actually a lot of problems that should be considered before traveling. Violent crime levels are among the highest in the Caribbean, and there have been cases where visitors have been murdered, and there is also a disturbingly high number of crimes against women. Because of the high crime levels, laws against firearms mean punishments are very strict, and there are also strict penalties for drug crimes in the country.
