- Warts are noncancerous skin growths, which can be painful or tender, caused by infection from the human papillomavirus (HPV). They are usually harmless and will sometimes disappear without treatment.
- A doctor injects the Candida antigen directly into the wart. Treatments that are more conventional include surgical removal, freezing and laser treatment.
- The few side effects reported include some swelling and redness at the injection site. Any type of foreign substance injected into your body has the potential of causing an allergic reaction.
- The overall studies of this treatment have been good. Dr. Thomas D. Horn, of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, conducted a study using the antigen on one group and a saline injection on the other; the patients treated by the antigen responded favorably in most cases.
- Research is ongoing for this form of treatment. The future application of the Candida antigen looks promising as a possible treatment for skin lesions common in HIV patients.
