- 1). Visit the United States Copyright Office online (see resources). You have two choices for registering. You can register online or by mail. Registering online is cheaper and faster; unless you have a preference for registering by mail, this is the best method and the preferred method of the U.S. Copyright Office.
- 2). Click "Electronic Copyright Office" on the home page of the United States Copyright Office. There are links to several documents you should read that will answer frequently asked questions about filing your copyright electronically. Proceed when you have read the documents.
- 3). Log in to the eCO (electronic copyright office) by clicking the link below the documents you've just read. Click the "Continue to eCO" button. Create an account so you will be able to log in later and check the status of your audio copyright registration.
- 4). Fill out the electronic form, which will ask for basic information regarding your audio registration, including title of work, media type and the name or names of the copyright holder.
- 5). Upload a copy of your audio. The United States Copyright Office keeps a copy on file of everything that is ever copyrighted. The U.S. Copyright Office can accept all major file types. For audio, you can upload a recording of your work, sheet music or both. All that matters is that it is in a fixed form.
