- Refrigerator temperatures range from 35 to 40 F, depending on the point in the cooling cycle and area of the refrigerator. The coldest area of the refrigerator is the shelf above the bottom storage drawer, and the warmest area of the refrigerator are the door shelves.
- Since different areas of the refrigerator experience different temperatures, foods should be stored in the correct location for best storage results. Store meats, fish and poultry in bottom shelves, eggs and dairy on top and middle shelves, fruits and vegetables in drawers and condiments in door shelves.
- A full refrigerator cools less effectively because there is not as much room for air circulation. Avoid overcrowding the refrigerator and defrost it if frost appears.
- Tomatoes, cucumbers, tropical fruits and breads should be stored at room temperature, not in the refrigerator.
