Organize Your Garage - Baby Step Approach

Organizing the garage can be an overwhelming task for many people.
It is the area in the home where all the "stuff" we don't have a place for ends up.
If your garage has spiraled out of control, you are not alone.
In fact, you are part of a very large group of people just like yourself.
The best approach I have seen to getting the garage, or any unorganized room for that matter, organized is following one simple rule:
Organize Your Garage In Baby Steps
The most common mistake people make when trying to get an area organized is trying to do it all at once.
While this approach may have some short term success, it usually falls off after a very short time and ends up in the same shape it was.
In fact, if you take the "get-r-done" approach it will usually end worse than it originally was after a short period of time.
Keep in mind that your garage didn't get this cluttered or unorganized overnight.
It most likely is a buildup of several months or years.
Expecting that you will be able to have it organized and clutter free in a day is only setting yourself up for failure.
The first thing you need to do is make a plan.
If your garage isn't very unorganized, you can go directly to researching which type of organization system you are going to purchase.
For the rest of us, we have to start at a much earlier step.
Select an area in the garage you are going to start with, such as a corner, a particular shelve or cabinet.
Set your watch or timer and dedicate 30 minutes or an hour to work on this one particular area and get it organized.
Throw away the things that need to be thrown away and start piles where you organize things of the same time.
When your time is up, stop working on the garage for that day.
Continue this process until you have your garage items neatly organized into stacks and the clutter is gone.
Once you have reached this point, you are ready to look at organization systems.
These range from wall storage, hanging storage to shelves.
Measure your area and draw out exactly what you are going to purchase.
Once you have your organization system in place, follow the same process as you did when you were removing the clutter.
Once you have your garage completely organized, your work isn't over.
Now you have to keep it that way.
The easiest way to do this is to make a schedule, picking a day where you will "tidy" up everything.
Depending on how much you use your garage, this could be weekly or monthly.
In summation, the most important thing to remember is Organize Your Garage In Baby Steps.
it will save you time in the long run and help you to keep your garage organized once you have everything in order.
